Brief Summary:

Pioneering event for the Central Hub South Met Scouts. Event will run from Saturday morning 8am to Sunday afternoon 5pm. Educational purpose for the weekend is Youth members recognise the value of pioneering in bushcraft situations and see what is possible within scouts This is an OAS Stage 4 and Stage5 course for participation in pioneering and is a pre-requisite for OAS Stage 6 Bushcraft-Pioneering and higher. Attending this workshop will give you a great grounding for pioneering and you can work towards earning your Stage 5 OAS Pioneering (However you must actively participate in at least six pioneering builds). The course is targeted for Scouts, but Venturers are also eligible.

Additional Information

On Saturday 22nd August to Sunday 23rd August, the leadership team of the Central Hub will be running a pioneering camp at Heathcote Scout Camp.

The event aims to address OAS Stage 4 to Stage 5 outcomes.

Participants will be required to bring an overnight pack, group scarf, sleep bag, warm clothes, towel, toiletires, mess kit, hat, sunscreen, enclosed shoes, gardening gloves and a water bottle.

All participants must also have their own 2 or 3 man tent for the Saturday night.

Youth participants should also bring their OAS book and a pen to get verified by leaders for completing activities.

The activities will consist of light construction, beginning of construction of major projects and setting up camp on Saturday. On Sunday, youth will finish constructing a suspension bridge, vomitron and camp table which they can play on after construction.

This activity will be supervised by a leader holding Trained Participant Pioneering and shadowed by a AA leader and SAIT assessor holding Guide qualifications. There will also be at least 1 other leader during the weekend holding Trained Participant Pioneering.

Where possible 1 leader from home unit is asked to attend in a supervision capacity. The activities for the weekend have been covered by the core team.

Scouts are encouraged to be able to do the following knots.

• Half hitch

• Figure 8 knot

• Clove hitch

• Reef knot

• Sheet bend

• Prussick Knot

• Timber hitch

• Rolling hitch

• Clove hitch (right and left handed)

• Clove hitch on a bight (mickey mouse ears)

• Square lashing
